Lesson Learned: A Faster Way to Setup A New Computer

This past weekend has been yet another eventful “Lesson Learned the Hard Way” weekend.  This weekend, I had my laptop die an untimely death.  To say it was unexpected would be a lie.  I saw the signs; I knew it was going to stop working for me sooner rather than later.  Thus, at the first sign of serious trouble, I began to think of laptops I have loved and lost over the years.  As I did, I suddenly realized a very disturbing fact:  I have gone through four laptops in nine years. As you can imagine, I was not delighted by this realization.  I was in fact, a bit aggravated.  Although my last computer lasted just shy of four years, I felt it had not been nearly long enough.  Since my computers have never had a virus before, and since I  am gentle with my computers and never, ever drop … Continue reading

How To Manually Download Your Bank Transactions into QuickBooks

Are you tired of entering every single Debit and Billpay transaction your company has?  Thanks to QuickBooks and their relationship with many different banks, this information can now be downloaded directly into your file, and QuickBooks can post the information for you.  To do it, follow the steps below: THE FOLLOWING IS AN EXCERPT FROM THE EBOOK “HOW TO DO A YEAR’S WORTH OF BOOKKEEPING IN ONE DAY”: QuickBooks is one of the best bookkeeping programs out there because it can “talk” to your bank account.  As of the publication of this book, hundreds of banks already are able to create a “Web Connect” file or an “IIF File” that can be dropped into your Company’s QuickBooks program.  Some banks (like Bank of America) are able to download as many as 11 months of bank transactions, while others (like Chase) will only allow you to download approximately 4 months of … Continue reading

BOOKKEEPING MONEY-SAVING TIP # 3: Edit Your Preferences

One obvious way to save time (and thus money) when it comes to bookkeeping is to avoid as many mistakes as possible.  However, it’s really easy to “accidentally” record items in if you’re going quickly, or if something should happen to distract you.  Therefore, to reduce the potential for making these time-consuming mistakes (time-consuming because you will have to find those items and delete / change them as you go along), thus saving money on your bookkeeping, we’re going to Edit Your Preferences. Here’s how you do it Step-By-Step: a. Click on “Edit”, then “Preferences”. b. Go to the “General” Tab, then the “My Preferences” tab. c. Make sure the button that says “Pressing Enter Moves Between Fields” is selected. (Believe it or not, this one little box will save you hours of bookkeeping time trying to fix mistakes.) d. Item C is the most important thing you can do … Continue reading

My Bookkeeping Books are in the Kindle’s Top 10 List in 72 Hours

Hey Everyone, I am so excited, I can hardly stand it. For the past couple weeks, I’ve been working to put my two Bookkeeping Books – “How to Do a Year’s Worth of Bookkeeping in One Day” and “How to Start a Lucrative Virtual Bookkeeping Business” – into Kindle format.  After a couple weeks messing around with Publisher, the files finally went live this past Thursday.  Within 72 hours, both of the books hit Kindle’s Top 10 Bookkeeping Lists, which was completely unexpected and completely invigorating.  Not only have they hit the Kindle’s Top 10 Bookkeeping list, but they are also in the Top 30 for Amazon’s Printed Bookkeeping Books, and the printed versions are not even available for purchase yet!  (Except for the PDFs on my website here, of course.)  In addition, “How to Do a Year’s Worth of Bookkeeping in One Day” also made Kindle’s Top 20 Management … Continue reading
