HOW TO DO YOUR BOOKKEEPING IN ONE HOUR
AN EASY BOOKKEEPING COURSE FOR QUICKBOOKS USERS
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again… I HATE BOOKKEEPING! And Yet I Blog About It
If I had to choose between doing bookkeeping and… Oh, ANYTHING ELSE… I would do the “Anything Else.” I would focus on my family, my writing, my blogging, business in general…etc. I would be out walking the beach or riding my Harley. I would be playing video games with my kids or travelling the world. I would be doing any number of things other than bookkeeping. Whether you’re a bookkeeper, a business owner, or a manager – I’m sure you’ve felt the same way at least once…especially when your accounts aren’t reconciling. You can deny it all you want, but I know the truth: Bookkeeping can be monotonous and/or frustrating at times. It can also be time-consuming. And let’s face it… the more time it takes to get your books in order, the more bookkeeping is going to cost your business.
I “fell into” bookkeeping many years ago thanks to my mother, Robin E. Davis. She had just started working for a company that had two terrible bookkeepers before her – one an embezzler, the other just didn’t know what she was doing. When my mom took over the books, she noticed immediately that there were major issues and she called me to come help out. My job: to recreate three full years worth of bookkeeping in less than three months. Now you may be wondering, why would an experienced bookkeeper call in an inexperienced 18-year-old college student to recreate three years worth of business expenses? Shouldn’t she call in another professional? The answer is Simple.
-
I was a college student, therefore, I needed the money and was cheap.
-
I had always excelled at math – always. I even ended up taking calculus in high school – I was that good.
-
I was really good with computer programs. And…
-
Bookkeeping runs in our family. (Seriously. My mother was adopted when she was young, and when she finally found her birth family, it turned out her birth father’s other children had all ended up in bookkeeping somehow – even though they all had different mothers. See – bookkeeping is in my blood.)
So there I was – 18 years old and set free to enter as much bookkeeping as quickly as I could. It was very interesting and I learned a lot very quickly. Over the years, I continued doing bookkeeping because it was easy money and good job security. (Businesses will always need bookkeepers.) I started my own Bookkeeping and Office Administration business back in 2003, largely because I wanted to work from home and be around my new baby. When some of my clients asked me to spend time in their office, I would do so, but I wanted to be at home. What ended up happening was I would do as much work as I could so that I could get out of my clients’ offices as quickly as possible.
Soon, I had my office visits down to One Hour every other week, and thus, The One Hour Bookkeeping Method was born.
THE PURPOSE OF THE ONE HOUR BOOKKEEPER BLOG ![]()
Anyone who has read this blog knows that I DO NOT advertise my services on this site. I have all the clients I want and am not looking for more. (I would rather spend my free time crunching bones at the roller derby instead of crunching numbers at the office.) The reason I started this blog was because I noticed the same problem popping up in many of the small businesses I worked with. The problem was that small businesses did not want to spend money on bookkeeping, and so they often hired the first unskilled, cheap bookkeeper they could find (or they would hand their books over to someone in the office who did not know what they were doing). While this may seem like a good idea, more often than not, the business owner would be opening up their business to all kinds of issues – the main ones being embezzlement and simple bookkeeping mistakes. I started this blog to help educate both the bookkeepers who did not know what they were doing and the small business owners who might be hiring an embezzler. My focus is to teach both bookkeepers and business owners how to protect themselves, their businesses, and their books. Naturally, the next step was to put together products that deal with bookkeeping issues.
THE ONE HOUR BOOKKEEPING METHOD
The One Hour Bookkeeping Method is actually a response to all of the inquiries I get about bookkeeping. People keep trying to hire me and I have to turn them away. They also ask me if I know of any educational courses that make bookkeeping simpler and that were created for small businesses. The One Hour Bookkeeping Method is my answer to those needs… “You don’t need me; you just need a set of procedures to simplify bookkeeping.”
That’s what The One Hour Bookkeeping Method is all about: Simple bookkeeping for the average person working in a small business atmosphere.
Here is what you will find in the One Hour Bookkeeping Method:
-
10 Very Simple Step-by-Step VIDEO Lessons: These lessons were created for the average bookkeeper, small business owner or other computer savvy person. These lessons are short videos with the longest lesson being 8 minutes long and the shortest being 2 minutes. All together, the videos take less than one hour to watch.
-
Follow Along Procedures: These videos were set up so that the average person can “follow along” in their bookkeeping program and do their books at the same time. While they will not be able to do their books in one hour the first time they use this program (since new policies and procedures must be put in place first and books need to be “brought up to date” first), eventually every small business will be able to do their average day-to-day bookkeeping steps in one hour a day, a week, or even a month.
-
Day-to-Day Procedures: This program focuses on only the Day-to-Day procedures, and not Payroll, Bank Reconciliations, Taxes, etc. The lessons that are covered include:
-
Accounts Payable
-
Accounts Receivable
-
Sales Receipts
-
Checking Account Entries
-
Credit Card Entries
-
Receiving Payments and Making Deposits
-
Job Costing
-
Printing Reports
-
Easy Ways to Keep in Touch with Your Customers and Vendors
-
And Even Filing.
-
-
These videos were made for QuickBooks Users specifically. While many of the lessons can be used with Quicken as well, and many of the lessons will help other bookkeeping program users, not all of the lessons will work for every bookkeeping program. But, all of the lessons will work for QuickBooks, whether you have an older version or a newer version.
-
A List of QuickBooks Shortcuts: Included with the One Hour Bookkeeping Method is a printable document that you can post near your computer. This document details many of the shortcuts that QuickBooks uses, which will save you even more time.
-
A Set-Up Checklist: Two additional printable documents that you can use to make sure you are using your QuickBooks program at maximum efficiency in order to save time and avoid unnecessary data entry mistakes.
